Recognizing A Dental Emergency

Not every dental problem is an emergency, but some situations require immediate attention.

Seek Emergency Care If You're Experiencing:

  • Severe or persistent tooth pain
  • Significant facial swelling, especially near the eye or under the jaw
  • A knocked-out permanent tooth
  • Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth
  • Signs of infection, including fever, swelling, or pus
  • A broken tooth with sharp edges cutting your tongue or cheek
  • Trauma to the jaw or face

If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call our office. We’ll help you determine whether you need to be seen immediately or can wait for a regular appointment.

Tooth Pain, Infection, & Swelling

Severe tooth pain is often caused by infection of the tooth’s inner pulp or an abscess at the root tip. Infection can spread beyond the mouth, becoming a serious systemic health threat without prompt treatment.

Signs of infection requiring immediate attention include:

  • Persistent or worsening toothache
  • Swelling in the face, jaw, or gums
  • Fever accompanying dental pain
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum near a tooth
  • A foul taste or discharge in the mouth

Dr. Mosmen will assess the extent of the infection, provide immediate relief, and determine whether root canal therapy, extraction, or antibiotic therapy is appropriate.

If you have severe facial swelling that is closing your eye or swelling under your chin, go to the emergency room immediately. These are signs of a life-threatening infection.

Broken, Chipped, Or Knocked-Out Teeth

Dental trauma requires prompt attention. The sooner you’re seen, the better the chance of saving the tooth and minimizing long-term damage.

For A Knocked-out Permanent Tooth:

  • Handle it by the crown only, never the root
  • Rinse gently with water without scrubbing
  • Try to reinsert it into the socket if possible
  • If not, keep it moist in milk or saliva
  • Get to our office within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth

For A Broken Or Chipped Tooth:

  • Rinse with warm water
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Save any pieces you can find
  • Call us immediately

Depending on the severity, Dr. Mosmen may restore the tooth with bonding, a crown, or other restorative treatment.

Same-Day Care For Urgent Needs

When you call our Brick, NJ office with a dental emergency, we prioritize getting you in the same day. Dr. Mosmen will evaluate your situation, take diagnostic imaging, and provide immediate relief and stabilization.

Our goal at every emergency visit is to eliminate your discomfort, assess the full extent of the problem using 3D CBCT imaging and digital X-rays, and develop a clear treatment plan that addresses both the immediate issue and its underlying cause.

We don’t just put a bandage on the problem. We find out what’s driving it and fix it properly.

Managing Trauma & Dental Injuries

Accidents happen, and when they involve your teeth, quick action makes all the difference. Dr. Mosmen treats dental trauma, including knocked-out or displaced teeth, fractured or cracked teeth, injuries to the lips, tongue, or gums, and jaw injuries or fractures.

For patients who need sedation to remain comfortable during emergency treatment, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation are available.

What To Do Before Reaching The Office

While waiting to see Dr. Mosmen, there are steps you can take at home to manage your emergency.

To Manage Pain & Swelling:

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face in 10-minute intervals
  • Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen according to package directions
  • Avoid aspirin, which can increase bleeding

For Bleeding:

  • Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze
  • Keep your head elevated
  • Avoid rinsing vigorously, which can dislodge clots

These measures provide temporary relief but are not substitutes for professional care. Always follow up with our office for proper evaluation and treatment.

Preventing Future Dental Emergencies

While not all dental emergencies are preventable, many are. To reduce your risk, maintain regular checkups so problems are caught before they become urgent, wear a custom mouthguard during sports and contact activities, avoid chewing ice, hard candy, and other hard objects, address dental pain or sensitivity early rather than waiting, and wear a nightguard if you grind or clench your teeth.

Dr. Mosmen’s approach to care focuses on prevention and early intervention, helping you avoid emergencies whenever possible.
